Confinement controls the creep rate in soft granular packings

Our hypothesis from prior work was confirmed: the mechanical load acting on the hydrogel packing determines its creep rate. Very satisfying to see such intuition work out!

Salamina Grain Workshop

Traveling to Masseria Salamina for a fantastic setting to do science in small groups. The location was perfect, food was amazing, the pool refreshing, and despite the distraction, lots of science got done. And Bari, the closest major town, has huge grains for coastal protection.

We had a demo at the annual EXPEDITIE NEXT, in Zwolle this time. We’ll be back next year with more fluidized beds, hourglasses, kinetic sand, Janssen effects and maybe more!

Viscoelastic material properties determine the contact mechanics of hydrogel spheres

The title speaks for itself. Hydrogel spheres are viscoelastic, both under compression and shear.
