We love interactions, in particular with particles

The GRC Conference “Granular Matter” was held again at Stonehill College.

Tom Mullin was visiting us this week, to discuss our projects on sinking (and rising) intruders in soft hydrogel packings. We had a great time with many inspiring discussions to stimulate another work of science. The first year students helping out on the project could also join for the dinner, connecting several generations of scientists!

We played a laser tag game in Laser Tag Amsterdam! .Guess who won…

Traveling to Masseria Salamina for a fantastic setting to do science in small groups. The location was perfect, food was amazing, the pool refreshing, and despite the distraction, lots of science got done. And Bari, the closest major town, has huge grains for coastal protection.

We had a demo at the annual EXPEDITIE NEXT, in Zwolle this time. We’ll be back next year with more fluidized beds, hourglasses, kinetic sand, Janssen effects and maybe more!

We were visiting Leeds, UK for the always fantastic Annual European Rheology Conference. There was too much good content to take too many pictures!

Visiting Olfa D’Angelo doing hypergravity research on granular materials at ESA / ESTEC in Noordwijk. The museum visit was the cherry on the cake.

The annual gathering of physicists working in The Netherlands took place again. What a great meeting, as always. The Byzantine location keeps amusing me and there is also plenty of applied physics going on!

The BSc program “Natuurkunde & Sterrenkunde” (Physics & Astronomy) at VU/UvA has a course called “NSP2” in the Fall. Students in this course, and the teachers, do various observations and sometimes stumble over unexpected things. Old glycerine is one, but funny droplet dynamics in thin film flows are another. Heavy liquids included as well. And can you determine the spectrum shown?

Your drink also has… particles! Then you either love particles and see them everywhere, or you are tipsy. Or both,
